So, I'm a GIANT sucker when it comes to taking my kid to pretty much any movie she'd like to see (though I do have SOME boundaries; I fought with all my might against seeing the likes of "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" and "Hotel for Dogs") so when she announced that she wanted to see "Robot Boy" I figured, why not? Now, I'm the first to admit that, while I watched the show as a kid, I wasn't the biggest fan... So I was FAR from excited to go see it. But I gotta say, I was pretty happily surprised. It's just a really nice story line about family, belonging, being different, etc. The animation's pretty. And it's got a bunch of little design tidbits aimed directly at parents that kept me pretty entertained trying to find more (Lenin propoganda in the robot revolution secret hangout??? Yeah, pretty funny.) Honestly, if you haven't seen it yet, go. It's worth it. Image from here.

things I did today

• Watched "The Brothers Bloom" and "My Life in Ruins". The former was great. Really great. Also this might be one of my fave movie posters EVER. Image from here.The later just meh, despite my love for my fellow canucks (honestly, there was a scene where a tour guide called the "Polite Canadians" Americans, and they beat the crap out of him. It was pretty great.) and a super-sexy Greek, it was SO clicheed and formulaic even I couldn't get into it.

• Discovered the joy that is mixing a pinch of chipotle powder into your hot chocolate. If you're still cold after THAT, well, you're probably dead.
• Got an orbital sander (HELL YES!) which means that the number of projects I can take on has just grown exponentially! Woot! Which also meant that the touch up jobs I've been meaning to do to my piano and end table finally got done, but it looks like the bathtub will have to wait until I pick up some more hardcore sandpaper...
• Found two solid wood desks on the side of the road, and ALMOST have the hubs convinced that they ARE in fact out there for anyone to grab and that WE should be the ones to grab them! I can't wait!
  

blog crush (I'm so embarassed/ing)

OK, I've been trying not to geek out. Really, I have. I've tried to resist. I've considered just doing a "Great Ressource" post... but that just doesn't seem appropriate for my level of full-blown, girl/geek/blogger crush hysterics... See, it sounds super-creeper, right? I know, I know. But I swear, it's not! It's just that this chick seriously has my FAVORITE blog right now! She's got what I consider to be the perfect combo: amazing photos, amazing subjects for those photos (both animate and inanimate), crazy "holy cow! how cool is that?!" scenarios to write about, amazing locales, and the best part: GREAT writing (and it's even translated from French and still maintains it's awesome?! That's some good stuff right there!)Trust me: a lot of the time when you get a site with great photos, the writing, while often good, is usually secondary... this girl's writing is super fun and lighthearted, and well... I guess cheeky is the best word... She puts a big fashion-coma/cheekiness induced coma on my face upon each visit. It's actually one of the few sites that I try to never visit unless I have time to really read through it... Kind of like those few albums that come along here and there that make you actually want to sit down, turn everything else off, pour yourself a hot chocolate and just LISTEN. Yeah... K, normally I tend to get a wee smidge tired of the whole opulence thing (I'm a MOMMY. That kind of sums it up for me. Regardless of any other circs.) But dear gawd! Is that a skull-topped, gilded McQueen (my current accessories design crush) clutch??? Yes please!

It's a Kraken! Really, who couldn't use a little giant squid-inspired rum in their lives??? hannah montana staggette

Yup. You read that right. My girlfriend otherwise known as the Megatron of Dooooom threw me a Hannah Montana-themed staggette. And by themed I mean THEMED. Hannah Montana decals all over the windows. Door poster. Chandelier. Paddle balls! Lip gloss. Hand soap. Cupcakes. A singing fekking pen! The hilarity was unparallelled. Can I just say how fun it was to have an all-girl grown-up sleepover with those rowdy chicks! 6 hot chicks, too much beer, pink hair dye, sour gummies, and filthy minds. That's MY idea of a good time! And in case you're wondering, that would be two of my ladies, one playing the other's Hannah Montana balloon boobs as bongos to the beat of "I've got a feeling". It was HYSTERICAL! Oh, and that's me in the corner with my Hanna Montana t-shirt, and a White Russian that they made me drink out of a Cinderella sippy cup (I swear, you spill a drink ONE TIME and they all a-holey!). Also, the night included the word "prosti-tarts". I think I'll be having that put on a t-shirt. Yep.

Hoo boy... this one was kind of slow building for me. At first I was like, "oh man, those masks are awesome. How "Breakfast at Tiffany's"!" Then peonies. And a short-haired bride. And vintage, gold Ebay shoes. And a vintage dress. And vintage Modern Bride (oy, I wish I had thought of that!). And awesome shades. Um, yeah. I'm sold. You? other people's weddings: Allison & Mark

Wow! How cute and awesome are these details from the wedding of Allison & Mark, featured over at Oh So Beautiful Paper? Normally I stay away from "citrusy" palettes, considering my near hatred of yellow (oh, and the smell of oranges makes me nauseous. Yes. I know. I'm weird.) but this is SO cute, and SO (God I hate this word, but still) fresh, that I just can't help myself! I think my favorite part is that, other than the colour scheme, none of it was planned... from the bride:

"We didn’t start out with a theme or an idea, and because each piece was done at different time during our planning the variety became part of the charm and the colors and hand-lettering tied it all together. All we knew was that we weren’t into anything that looked too perfect or “designed” or into just stamping our monogram onto each piece."

Just goes to show how far letting things unfold naturally will go towards giving so much more character and personality to, well, anything! Yes you should have an idea or direction, but as long as you trust your instincts, and make a point to step back every once in a while and take in the big picture, I'm a big believer in a collection of wonderful ideas rather than a perfectly staged "scheme". Good job, kids!
